"If
we want an easy experiment with sure success, we should go
to work among poor children, offering them an environment which they do
not possess."
- Maria Montessori
The Liwalo
na Liwe
(lih-wall-oh gnaw lee-way)
Foundation
is an organization dedicated to providing outreach
to children. "Liwalo na liwe" translates from
Kiswahili to
“What will be will be.” This means we
accept the
social issues that children face and try to overcome them through
targeted, personal relationships. In accordance with this mission, we
publish materials that raise awareness of children in
difficult
situations, hoping to find value in the struggle that such children
endure.
Using the money generated from the sale of our publications, we seek to
combat the issues we have documented. Our current outreach
effort
is centered on the growing number of street children in Iringa,
Tanzania, resulting largely from poverty and the impact of HIV/AIDS. We
want to provide street children with employable skills along with
providing education, clothing, shelter, and medicine, in essence
providing what parents would. In the future, we hope to build learning
centers in Ghana, Jamaica and the United States which use similar
methods of community development and targeted instruction for
disadvantaged children.
